Hydrodemolition – A40 Westway Expansion Joint Replacement, London

Client: Freyssinet
Principal Contractor: Costain
Works Commenced: November 2024

Expansion joint

Aquaforce Concrete Services continues hydrodemolition works on the A40 Westway to enable expansion joint replacement. This critical infrastructure project forms part of a larger refurbishment effort maintaining the safety and longevity of the elevated A40, which spans from the Wood Lane Flyover to the west side of the Marylebone Flyover.

The primary objective of this project is to prepare the existing expansion joints for replacement by Freyssinet, ensuring a seamless integration into the bridge structure. The key challenges include:

  • Precision removal of deteriorated concrete without damaging underlying structures
  • Operating in a high-traffic urban environment with lane restrictions and closures
  • Managing water usage and waste treatment in compliance with environmental standards

Aquaforce is utilising advanced hydrodemolition techniques to remove damaged concrete with precision. Hydro demolition is an ideal method for this project as it allows for the safe removal of old material without harming the surrounding structure. Our scope of work includes:

  • Hydrodemolition of expansion joints along A40 Westway
  • Surface preparation for the installation of new expansion joints
  • Ensuring structural integrity by preserving sound concrete and embedded reinforcement

Given the scale of the A40 Westway and the need to address high-priority sections first, the work is being carried out in multiple phases:

Phase 1 (Completed Summer 2022):

  • Replacement of the operationally critical roller shutter expansion joint

Phase 2 (Ongoing) includes:

  • Replacement of 10 expansion joints
  • Resurfacing and waterproofing
  • Concrete repairs

Water for the works is supplied by Aquaforce’s fleet of FORS-approved road tankers. Wastewater is treated on-site using Aquaforce’s water treatment units and discharged into Thames Water-approved locations. Aquaforce has the capacity to work on three separate bridge joints simultaneously over the weekend road closure, supplying clean water and treating the wastewater at all three locations day and night. These efforts align with industry best practices to reduce environmental impact while maintaining operational efficiency.

By using hydrodemolition for expansion joint preparation, Aquaforce is ensuring that new joints integrate seamlessly, enhancing the durability and performance of the A40 Westway. This refurbishment project will significantly improve the structural integrity of the road, benefiting the approximately 96,000 vehicles that use this critical route daily.
Aquaforce Concrete Services is proud to contribute its expertise to this vital infrastructure improvement, demonstrating our commitment to precision, sustainability, and innovation in the industry.
